On the outside, they look pretty familiar. An open world. A big city. Cars to drive. Cars to steal. Guns to shoot. And people to kill.But Mafia 3 isn�t just an open-world game where you can drive and shoot and steal and do whatever you want in a crime-infested city. After spending around six hours playing a hefty chunk of the opening, it became pretty clear Mafia 3 is something more than that. Got feedback on our player?
We want to hear it.Here are the basics: Mafia 3 takes place in New Bordeaux - Hanger 13�s version of New Orleans. It�s set in 1968 in the deep south, and is seeped in all the tension and blatant racism that comes with that.The story follows Lincoln Clay, a mixed-race orphan who finds a new family in the Black Mob before he�s shipped overseas to fight in the Vietnam War.
He comes back and wants to go legitimate, but suffers a betrayal that pulls him back into a life a crime and sets off Mafia 3's chain of events.You�d think that�s a pretty great starting point for a cold-blooded, mob-murdering psychopath to start his remorseless rampage. But what struck me hardest is that this isn�t a clean-cut revenge story. It�s full of baggage. It�s sad. I know how cliche it sounds to say that I actually felt for the characters, but after the first opening hours of Mafia 3 I had a bleeding heart for Lincoln.
This is a story I�m anxious to get back into. Got feedback on our player? We want to hear it.It helps that the story design, delivery, and writing are all very much on point - and credit to developers Hangar 13 for playing with a non-traditional storytelling structure.
The plot is conveyed through a series of one-on-one interviews, old recordings from government hearings, flashbacks, and recreations of events from other characters� perspectives.It�s genuinely refreshing to be able to jump back and forth in time to meet new characters rather than slog through a linear timeline where all the necessary characters are introduced conveniently one right after the other.
Ultimately, my takeaway from the opening hours was that Mafia 3�s world and its characters all existed before I showed up to eavesdrop in on them, and rather than having the story revolve around me I�m just seeing the necessary parts of its history.

We want to hear it.But, of course, Mafia 3 is an open-world game, and speaking with the developers at Hangar 13 they seem pretty intent on letting you play your way and customize your world.You�re given a variety of optional activities in reclaiming the city from the mobsters who double-crossed you: things like breaking up sex rings, finding and torching drugs caches, tailing VIPs, busting up porn shoots, and burning racist propaganda from the Southern Union - Mafia 3�s version of the KKK.
You can choose to bust it all up or take it over and skim the profit, but ultimately the goal is to wrest it out of the hands of the established crime family. Got feedback on our player? We want to hear it.All these side objectives and more were littered across the map when I got into the open-world stuff later on, but I�m as impressed with the customization settings Hangar 13 has stuck in here.
In addition to difficulty settings, you can tailor your level of aim assist. You can activate a �Simulation� driving setting that turns your sticky arcade traction into less-forgiving, slippery handling. I love that you can tailor the experience to meet your preferred play style.Playing on Normal with Low aim assist and simulated driving, I died a lot, because staying alive in Mafia 3 is harder than most GTA-style open-world crime games.
Tangling with the cops is not smart. Running into a room guns blazing? Also not smart. Much of my successes came from skulking through warehouses and brothels, eliminating henchmen one by one with brutal takedowns. But even those can be toggled into non-lethal versions if you�re not into the whole gratuitous violence thing. Got feedback on our player?
We want to hear it.And Mafia 3 is just incredibly brutal. The executions are cringe-inducing and the violence is almost artistic. Yet I cringed just as much at the bloodless interactions with other characters, because the social climate of the deep south in the late �60s makes me feel uncomfortable, and honestly a little guilty.
It�s like I�m watching something I�m not supposed to see. But though I had no idea what the organized-crime scene in 1960�s Louisiana looked like when I began, Hangar 13�s depiction feels realistic and believable.That�s what�s really sold me about Mafia 3. In addition, players can also perform executing moves and engage in melee-combat. The game also features a cover system, allowing players to take cover behind objects to avoid enemy gunfire.

[4] Plot [ edit ]Mafia III is set in the year 1968, and revolves around Lincoln Clay, a biracial orphan. As a boy, he was adopted by black mobsters and later served in the Vietnam War.
After being discharged, he returned to New Bordeaux (a fictionalized version of New Orleans) and was subsequently inducted into the black mob. For his first assignment, he works with Giorgi Marcano, heir to the Marcano crime family, to rob the Federal Reserve. The money is divided evenly, but Giorgi and his father have other plans.
They stage an ambush at a black-owned bar, killing all of the mob's leaders and leaving Lincoln for dead with a bullet in his skull. After a friendly priest, Father James, saves his life, Lincoln sets out to rebuild the mob and exact revenge against the Marcano and their associates. [5] He also seeks the help of other crime bosses, including Cassandra, Burke, and Vito Scaletta.

[6] In November 2012, 2K Czech, the developer of the original Mafia and Mafia II, announced that the company was working on a "top secret, AAA game". [7] However, the company was later restructured on January 10, 2014, and the main studio in Prague was shuttered, [8] with resources being allocated to a new headquarters in Novato, California. [9] A new studio called Hangar 13 was established by 2K Games in Novato in the same year.
Headed by Haden Blackman, who had previously worked with LucasArts, the studio was said to be working on a new project. [10]The game was officially teased by 2K on July 28, 2015, [11] and was formally revealed at Gamescom 2015 with a cinematic trailer. Mafia III is set to be released on October 7, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
[12] [13]Hangar 13 and 2K Games wanted to stay true to the quality that many users expected over the previous games. The game uses the graphics software Simplygon. [14] The development team were interested in creating a world based on New Orleans, and eventually decided on setting the game in 1968. The team used a collection of old photographs to recreate the world.
